Return to School Update 2 4/8/2020

Update 2

Dear Parent and Students

I hope this message finds you safe and well. The past few days have been extremely challenging and difficult for the people of Claregalway and Carnmore and indeed our wider school community. As outlined in our last update many have lost family members over recent times and please know that the school is here to support and help in whatever we can can. We will continue to support all young people through and with local hurling and football clubs and also upon our return to school. If anyone wishes to email should you have any concerns please do so.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all families who have lost anyone but are particularly with the Flaherty family at this time.

Return to School

  • School reopening dates are listed in Update 1, which is in a previous post and detailed below this one
  • High risk Students - details in Update 1 listed below - if you have any concerns please email

Update 2

  • Timetable and Yr group Zones
    • We have decided to group Year groups into Zones in the school
      • Block R - (our 1st Building) 2nd and 6th Years for all lessons and lunchbreaks and lockers
      • Block A - (Middle Building) 3rd and 5th Years for all lessons and lunchbreaks and lockers
      • Block A - (Newest Building) 1st and TY for all lessons and lunchbreak and lockers
    • We will be working on re-rooming all lessons over the coming weeks and teachers will move to classrooms
    • Students will only move for options within their assigned group of rooms- for practical subjects, these will be theory based for the first few weeks until further guidance issues or restrictions ease.
  • Stationery Lists
    • These will be posted on the school website in the coming days but for all year groups other than first year, it will be just a continuation of your normal needs- copies, pens etc. Individual teachers may ask you to buy some additional items over the first few weeks. Such as Art kits or TG kits.
    • 1st Years will have specific requirements. related to Art and Maths (calculators) and again these will be posted on the website
  • Face Masks and Visors
    • All students must have their own supply of facemasks, either disposable or washable. It is advised to begin to purchase these over the coming weeks- They should be plain in design with no inappropriate imagery on them.
    • Face shields and visors are advisable but not essential, it may be more comfortable to talk friends and wearing a face shield - the ones with glasses/spectacle type frames rather than headbands are often more comfortable to wear.

Again over the coming weeks more advice will come as we work through the guidelines and we will update this post. And place all into a comprehensive guide for students and one for parents closer to returning

Update 1

Dear Parents and Students

I hope this message finds you all safe and well. The past few months have been extremely challenging for us all as we have had to come to terms with life under COVID-19.

I would firstly like to sympathise with all students and their families who have lost family members over the past few months. Please know that the school community is here to support you here through this difficult time in your live and know that upon return to school we will do everything possible to support you.

The long awaited Roadmap has just been published and it is a welcome set of documents which will offer us guidance and direction over the coming weeks to safely re-open the school buildings for students and staff. Over the coming weeks there will be regular updates posted on this page as more guidance comes from the Dept and as we progress through the Roadmap documents. ( for those that want to read a few hundred pages see here

As a starting point in order to develop routines, practices and complete training for all school staff will be in training on the 28th , 31st Aug. and 1st of Sept.

  • 1st Years will return on 2nd Sept only and back on the 7th
  • 3rd & 6th years on the 3rd Sept and back on the 7th
  • 2nd & 5th years on the 4th Sept and back on the 7th
  • TY & All Year groups on the 7th Sept

This is to allow the development and working through with students of return to school COVID protocols for all students.

There will be many changed practices and routines in the school moving forward and it will only be possible to implement them fully to keep school a COVID free zone with the help and support of school staff, teachers and students.

School timetables will be delayed this year until late August as we split classes where it is required, recruit and assign new teachers. We are developing additional classroom spaces internally within our buildings, additional gym room and Science/Maths space (some of this work we had started already).

We are looking at covering outside spaces for lunchtimes during wet weather and additional inside and outside seating for lunchbreaks.

As new routines and practices are developed over the coming weeks we will start to compile these here and publish them.

For incoming first year students we will be sending you and your parents short information videos along with an induction booklet in the coming weeks to assist with the transition to school.

This week can I ask that any parent who has concerns for their son/daughter and feel they may fall into a high risk categoryand feel that a return to school may not be possible to contact me at so as we can start to plan for supporting them.

I know many will have fears and worries but please rest assured that we will do everything possible to make the return to school safe for all. We are looking forward to seeing all students and staff return, our halls have been quite long enough.

Finally, some may have heard but I would like to congratulate Mr O'Ceallaigh who has been appointed Príomhoide in Coláiste na Coiribe. Mr O'Ceallaigh has been an outstanding teacher, Year Head and deputy principal in CBC over the past 6yrs, we as a school wish Mr O'Ceallaigh every success in his new journey. We are also delighted to welcome John Cooke as our new Deputy Principal, John brings a wealth of experience having served as Principal in a number of schools most recently in Colaiste na Coiribe.

So please keep a close eye to the website and this post in particular as updates will issue regularly here.
