Despite the current school closures - we must look ahead to September 2020. Our 3rd and 4th years must choose what path they want to take next in Coláiste Bhaile Chláir. There are a couple of options. Please find the information below outlining the various options they can take.
Students can choose to apply for
- Transition Year (3rd year students only)
- Leaving Cert Applied
- Leaving Cert - 5th Year Subject Options
In lieu of the parents information evening we were due to have on March 19th; we have included the presentations here for you - with interactive elements to help you discuss and decide which option is right for you.
1. Transition Year
Our TY programme
- One Year School Based Programme between Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle
- Acts as a bridge between the dependent learning at JC and the goal of a more independent self-directed and motivated Senior Cycle student.
- Optional – All students are eligible but what a student gains from TY largely depends on what they put in – you reap what you sow!
- Gives chance for development of skills in key areas
-
- Personal Development – Maturity and Responsibility.
- Academic and Technical Skills – Focus on interdisciplinary skills and self-directed learning.
- Life and Social Skills – Finding a role among peers, in school and in society.

2. Leaving Cert Applied
The Leaving Cert applied is a two year programme in place of the traditional Leaving Certificate. It is aimed at preparing students for adult and working life with an emphasis on practical approaches to teaching and continuous assessment. It is suitable for students who benefit from a practical/hands on approach to learning and who feel the traditional Leaving Certificate does not cater.
Please click here to access more information about all aspects of the programme.

3. 5th Year Subject Options
Please use the PowerPoint below to inform yourself on all of the subject choice options available and to discover what subjects might be important to you, for your future career or college opportunities.
To Summarise:
- English, Irish and Maths are core subjects, every student will study these.
- You will then choose your top 5 subject's from the 4 modern languages and 22 options of science, creative, practical and social subject groupings
- We will endeavour to give you, your top 4 subject choices, but we ask you to choose 5 as it will depend on timetabling and availability.
- Most students will choose a modern foreign language and 4 additional subjects to then study 3 of these 4
- Some students will not choose a modern foreign language and then will pick 5 options to study 4 of these
- Please see slide outlining the implications of not choosing a foreign language so you are aware of the limitations involved.
It is very important that you take some time to research the subjects you intend to choose - I have prepared this PowerPoint on how to access all of the information that careers portal have on each subject. In addition you can email myself Ms C Joyce, Mr Flynn, or any of our subject teachers will be happy to advise you on their own subject's through email.
