The Importance of Attendance at Coláiste Bhaile Chláir
At Coláiste Bhaile Chláir we believe that regular school attendance is essential for students to achieve their full potential. Each day of learning builds on the previous one, and being present ensures that students do not miss out on valuable educational opportunities.
Here are some key statistics about school attendance and its impact on student success:
- 95% Attendance: Students with this attendance rate miss around 9 days of school per year. This is generally considered excellent and keeps learning on track.
- 90% Attendance: Missing 19 days of school in a year means almost a full month of learning is lost, which can impact progress significantly.
- 85% Attendance or Below: Missing over 28 days of school in a year can have a serious impact on academic achievement and engagement.
Our goal at Coláiste Bhaile Chláir is to work with families to help students maintain an attendance rate of 95% or above.
How We Support Attendance
We aim to create a welcoming, supportive environment that encourages students to attend every day. Here's how we work together:
What WE will do:
- Clear Communication: Parents will receive regular updates on their child’s attendance percentage through the TYRO app
- Support for Challenges: If your child is experiencing difficulties that affect attendance, our pastoral care team is here to help.
- Celebrating Success: We recognize and reward excellent and improved attendance with certificates and other initiatives.
- Meet & Greet: We will welcome all students through our doors each day.
- Daily attendance: Monitor your child's attendance and punctuality daily.
- Lateness Message: Send personal mails via TYRO to parents/guardians to notify you when your child has arrived late to school.
- Communication: Call home to discuss your child's attendance with you when needed.
- Attendance meetings: Invite you to attend our school for attendance meetings if we have concerns.
- Positive Attendance Promotion: we will run a number of competitions and awareness campaigns this year to place a focus on the importance of attendance.
- Parent/Guardian Attendance Workshops: We truly understand that attendance is a difficult barrier for some families and students. To help support you in this, we will run workshops to support parents and guardians dealing with this stressful situation.

What You Can Do as a Parent
- Encourage Regular Attendance: Emphasize the importance of being in school every day.
- Plan Ahead: Schedule appointments and family holidays outside of school time whenever possible through the TYRO app
- Stay Informed: Download the TYRO app and turn notifications on so you can regularly check your child’s attendance and reach out if you notice any issues.
- Encourage and Support: your child to come to school on time every day. We would greatly appreciate your unwavering support with this.
- Appointments: Inform the school via the school office or year head in advance about any essential appointments. Please do everything possible to ensure all appointments are outside of school hours.
- Attendance uncertainty: If you’re unsure if your child is well enough to attend school, send them to school as they often feel better upon arrival. If your child is sick/contagious please keep them at home until they are well enough to return.
- Transport back up plan: Have a backup plan in case your child misses transport; consider involving a family member, neighbour or friend. We have bike racks for those that cycle, and we are an Active School so we promote students walking to school where possible.
- Communication about difficulties: If you and your child are facing challenges with school attendance, call us, emails us, reach out.
- Check in on the TYRO App: This will give you a clear insight into your child’s attendance and punctuality throughout each school day.
Attendance Policy
We are committed to complying with national attendance guidelines, and any absences must be reported to the school promptly. Please notify the school office by TYRO app or ring the school office on 091799001 if your child will be absent, and provide a note or email explaining the reason when they return.
