Student Referral
Students can self-refer or refer a peer they are concerned off by emailing a member of the Wellbeing Team, dropping into the Pastoral Care Support Office or checking in with their Caomhnóirí during their SPHE weekly class.
Parental Referral
Parents can make referrals by contacting a member of the Wellbeing Team and requesting that their child be seen by a Wellbeing staff member. To provide an efficient referral process the most suitable member to address is the child’s Caomhnóirí. The Wellbeing team work in close collaboration with parents of any student who is linking with them so that there is comprehensive support being given to students and parents.
Wellbeing /Guidance Structure
Coláiste Bhaile Chláir is part of the One Good School Initiative
Jigsaw’s One Good School is a comprehensive initiative which supports the mental health and wellbeing of young people, and those around them, by
developing a shared responsibility for mental health across the whole-school community.
Coláiste Bhaile Chláir Wellbeing /Guidance Team offers student support service within the school to address the emotional needs that young people can have in response to experiences such as family breakdown, bereavement, loss, family and peer relationship difficulties, anxiety and bullying. The Wellbeing also supports staff and parents in addressing these concerns.
The Wellbeing /Guidance Team at Coláiste Bhaile Chláir consists of
- Ms S Hanley
- Ms C Joyce
- Mr C Flynn
- Ms L Ryan
- Mr Sheridan
and Year Ceannairí and Class Caomhnóirí. The guidance counsellor, psychotherapist and the pastoral care team will offer support to students who are presenting with mild to moderate level of emotional distress that can be supported during school term. For students who present with moderate to severe emotional distress, that require more intensive work and out of school hours support the student support services will provide assessments, recommendations, and referrals to appropriate agencies.
The Caomhnóirí also links in with their group on a weekly basis which creates a relationship and rapport with the students and provides opportunity to address any issues they maybe having. The Caomhnóirí role is that of a mentor who supports each student to assist them in Coláiste Bhaile Chláir Vision “Together We Will Achieve”. The Caomhnóirí mentoring role also follows best practice from research by UCD (2012) in the My World Survey National Study of Youth Mental Health which highlighted that having one good adult as being a strong protective factor for mental health.
The Wellbeing Team is led by an Assistant Principal with responsibility for Wellbeing (Ms Hanley) who facilitates a number of programs for students. These include Anti Bullying Ambassador Program, Student Council, TY Leadership/Mentor Program, Wellbeing Student Ambassadors etc. Ms Hanley continuously liaises with other Leadership staff and Caomhnóirí to facilitate programs for specific curriculum domains that are delivered in classes.
The Wellbeing Team links and refers to appropriate external support agencies and work in collaboration so the needs of the students are best met so that “Together We Will Achieve”
The Department of Education and Skills also provides Psychologists to the School. Access to the psychological service is administered through the Wellbeing Team. The Psychologists are available on request but are limited in their involvement as they cover all primary schools and post primary schools in the county. Parental consent is required to access this service for students who are under 18 years of age.
The purpose of the Wellbeing Team is to ensure a child is supported and learns the skills to address emotional challenges and stresses in life which develops emotional intelligence and that is an essential competency for life.
